President Obama spoke yesterday about federal budget and the national deficit. President Obama has relayed that the budget debate is about more than just cutting and spending reforms. He has said that he would like to end the programs that are not working and reinforce the ones that are working. President Obama would like to prove that we can afford our commitments. The big question for Americans across the nation pertains to which commitments are considered worthy of continuation, and which are considered worthy of extensive cuts or even extinction. President Obama stated yesterday that he is ready to make the “tough cuts.” The poor, disabled, and elderly of our nation want to know how much the budget cuts and spending reforms will negatively impact services and benefits that they currently receive via programs like Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Obama’s speech yesterday was not very clear on the exact programs or services that may be negatively impacted due to the proposed budget plan. What is more clear is that the entire plan does encompass reform to tax code and changes to provisional programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. The plan is structured so that it can cut approximately $4 trillion from the nation’s deficit in just over ten years. Details of how the plan will specifically affect programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security have not yet been presented in a comprehensive manner. Author: Stephen Johnson
