Current Gold, Silver, Platinum Price Per Ounce Notes, Copper Price Per Pound; Contract Delivery Rate News Precious Metals January 3rd, 2011

Floor price for precious metals ended last session trending green. Gold for
February delivery was up by 1.10%. Silver for March delivery was green by 1.39%.
Platinum for April delivery was green by 1.65% and Copper for March delivery was
green by 1.94%. The Safe Haven assets were a popular area to position money as
the market fluctuated and the dollar value was more volatile and left investors
feeling less comfortable. Gold for February delivery floor price ended at
$1,421.40 an ounce. Silver for March contract delivery ended the session at
$30.94 an ounce. Platinum ended the session at $1,778.20 an ounce for April
contract delivery. Copper ended at $4.45 per pound for March contract delivery.
Trending was on the positive side for precious metal commodities due to recent
economic concerns and the past devaluation of the dollar. Investors are
optimistic though that the market will gain strength and continue to recover,
possibly at a faster pace. This will be an interesting and important week in the
market that will set the tone for composite index trending, but also precious
metal commodity trend-lines. Gold had a good year last year and safe haven
investors are hoping to see these trends continue in 2011. The dollar index is
moving higher for the first time in days and as precious metals typically move
inversely to the dollar, precious metal investors will be watching closely to
decipher movement. Author: Camillo Zucari

What is Options?

An option is a type of financial instrument classed as derivatives because they derive their value from an underlying asset. An option gives its holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or to sell some asset (In return for granting the option, the seller collects a payment (the premium) from the buyer. Granting the option is also referred to as "writing" the option. In many cases the option can be sold on by its original buyer, and this is why the distinction between the term "seller" and "writer" is useful when describing options. It is the writer who is the particular seller who must make good on delivering (or receiving) the underlying asset or its cash equivalent, not any seller. Types of Options: The two types of options are calls and puts: A call gives the holder the right to buy an asset at a certain price within a specific period of time. Calls are similar to having a long position on a stock. Buyers of calls hope that the stock will increase substantially before the option expires. A put gives the holder the right to sell an asset at a certain price within a specific period of time. Puts are very similar to having a short position on a stock. Buyers of puts hope that the price of the stock will fall before the option expires. People who buy options are called holders and those who sell options are called writers; furthermore, buyers are said to have long positions, and sellers are said to have short positions. The price at which an underlying stock can be purchased or sold is called the strike price. This is the price a stock price must go above (for calls) or go below (for puts) before a position can be exercised for a profit. All of this must occur before the expiration date. For call options, the option is said to be in-the-money if the share price is above the strike price. A put option is in-the-money when the share price is below the strike price. The amount by which an option is in-the-money is referred to as intrinsic value. The total cost (the price) of an option is called the premium. This price is determined by factors including the stock price, strike price, time remaining until expiration (time value) and volatility because of the versatility of options, there are many types and variations of options. Non-standard options are called exotic options, which are either variation on the payoff profiles of the plain vanilla. Working of stock options: Suppose the premium for an August 100 call of Company X currently trading at $90 is $5. The expiry of this option will be the third Friday of August. So, at $5 we are buying the right and not the obligation to purchase 1 share of X at $100. Cost of 1 option = $5. Cost of 1 contract = $ 5×100 = $500. The option will be exercised only when the share price goes above $100. We will breakeven at $100 + $5 (strike rate + premium) i.e. $105/option and $10500/contract. The share price and option price of the august 100 option of  X Co. after the end of June, July and on expiration is given below. JUNE                           92 (Stock price)                      6 (premium) JULY                           96 (Stock price)                      8  (premium) EXPIRATION               95 (Stock price)                  worthless We won't be able to exercise the option as the stock price has not gone above $100 till expiry. So, our loss is the amount of premium paid I.e. $500. In case the share prise on expiration was $103 then the option would have been exercised at the strike price of $100 and our profit per share would have been $3 (103-100). So, profit on exercising the option would have been $300. So, our net profit would have been profit on exercising options – option premium = $300-$500 = ($200).

Can Stocks Continue Surge or is Slump on Horizon?

Its true that based on a number of metrics, this market is overbought. Price
volatility is extremely low. Small options investors are extremely confident,
maybe even complacent, while large traders are growing increasingly skittish. I
worried about this in a previous blog post. But on the other hand, there are
many positives. We are entering one of the strong periods of seasonality out
there the first quarter of the third year of the presidential term. And breadth
is improving, with the cumulative NYSE advance-decline line pushing to new
highs. Indeed, despite Thursdays mid-day losses for the major averages, as I
write this advancing issues are outpacing decliners by 200 issues. Moreover, key
leading sectors are starting to perk up again. Im seeing early signs of strength
in semiconductors, transports, and retail stocks again after a long period of
underperformance. And emerging market stocks which tend to lead the U.S. market
are coming back to life thanks to the dollars weakness. Heres what it means,
and how to take advantage: Thanks to the holiday travel and winter weather, a
low volume standoff is underway. The bull and the bears are locked in battle
with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing within a 50 point range over the
past week. But thats set to change soon. The catalyst will be the December jobs
report, which will be released next Friday. So far, weve had every sign that the
economy is improving evidence that supports the bulls case. The only problem,
gleefully pointed out by the bears, is that weve yet to see a turn in the still
terrible job situation. Weve already seen a recovery in corporate profits. Weve
seen a recovery in industrial production. Weve already seen a banking recovery,
with loan losses diminishing and new loan origination perking up. Weve already
seen the credit market heal. And weve also had plenty of secondary evidence to
suggest a jobs recovery is underway. Today, initial weekly jobless claims
plunged to 388,000 the first sub-400k reading since July 2008. Personal income
is up. And payroll withholding tax receipts are up. But we havent seen the
employment rate come down meaningfully or significant additions to payrolls. If
the December report comes in under expectations expect a swift and violent
decline before the uptrend resumes. If the report just meets expectations or
even exceeds them, we could see a quick upward pop that sucks in all the cash on
the sidelines like a flash fire exhausting all the oxygen in the room. I think
the more optimistic scenario is likely and recommend investors focus on stocks
in sectors groups demonstrating relative strength. In the emerging markets,
Brazil, Thailand, and Malaysia all look strong. Related ETFs include the Market
Vectors Brazil Small Cap (NYSE: BRF ), iShares Thailand (NYSE: THD ), and
iShares Malaysia (NYSE: EWM ). The Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH ) and Retail
SPDR (NYSE: XRT ) are also worth a look. Be sure to check out Anthonys new

Stocks Going Ex Dividend the Second Week of January

dow2664
Negocioenlinea

Here is our latest update on the stock trading technique called ‘Buying Dividends’. This is the process of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend . This technique generally works only in bull markets. In flat or choppy markets, you have to be extremely careful. In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can’t sell the stock until after the ex date. The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has compiled a downloadable and sortable Excel list of the stocks going ex dividend during the next week or two. The list contains many dividend paying companies, all with market caps over $500 million, and yields over 2%. Here are a few examples showing the stock symbol, the market capitalization, the ex-dividend date and the yield. Abbott Laboratories (ABT) market cap: $73.3B ex div date: 1/12/11 yield: 3.7% Saul Centers, Inc. (BFS) market cap: $871.0M ex div date: 1/12/11 yield: 3.1% City Holding Company (CHCO) market cap: $582.1M ex div date: 1/12/11 yield: 3.6% Corus Entertainment Inc. (CJREF) market cap: $1.8B ex div date: 1/12/11 yield: 3.4% Foot Locker, Inc. (FL) market cap: $3.0B ex div date: 1/12/11 yield: 3.1% Shaw Communications Inc. (SJR) market cap: $9.1B ex div date: 1/13/11 yield: 4.2% The additional ex-dividend stocks can be found at wsnn.com. (If you have been to the website before, and the latest link doesn’t show up, you may have to empty your cache.) If you like dividend stocks, you should check out the high yield utility stocks and the Monthly Dividend Stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com or WSNN.com. Dividend definitions: Declaration date: the day that the company declares that there is going to be an upcoming dividend. Ex-dividend date: the day on which if you buy the stock, you would not be entitled to that particular dividend; or the first day on which a shareholder can sell the shares and still be entitled to the dividend. Record date : the day when you must be on the company’s books as a shareholder to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is normally set for stocks two business days before the record date. Payment date: the day on which the dividend payment is actually made, which can be as long at two months after the ex date. Don’t forget to reconfirm the ex-dividend date with the company before implementing this technique. Disclosure: Author did not own any of the above at the time article was written. Can Stocks Continue Surge or is Slump on Horizon?

It’s true that based on a number of metrics, this market is overbought. Price volatility is extremely low. Small options investors are extremely confident, maybe even complacent, while large traders are growing increasingly skittish. I worried about this in a previous blog post. But on the other hand, there are many positives. We are entering one of the strong periods of seasonality out there — the first quarter of the third year of the presidential term. And breadth is improving, with the cumulative NYSE advance-decline line pushing to new highs. Indeed, despite Thursday’s mid-day losses for the major averages, as I write this advancing issues are outpacing decliners by 200 issues. Moreover, key leading sectors are starting to perk up again. I’m seeing early signs of strength in semiconductors, transports, and retail stocks again after a long period of underperformance. And emerging market stocks — which tend to lead the U.S. market — are coming back to life thanks to the dollar’s weakness. Here’s what it means, and how to take advantage: Thanks to the holiday travel and winter weather, a low volume standoff is underway. The bull and the bears are locked in battle — with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing within a 50 point range over the past week. But that’s set to change soon. The catalyst will be the December jobs report, which will be released next Friday. So far, we’ve had every sign that the economy is improving — evidence that supports the bull’s case. The only problem, gleefully pointed out by the bears, is that we’ve yet to see a turn in the still terrible job situation. We’ve already seen a recovery in corporate profits. We’ve seen a recovery in industrial production. We’ve already seen a banking recovery, with loan losses diminishing and new loan origination perking up. We’ve already seen the credit market heal. And we’ve also had plenty of secondary evidence to suggest a jobs recovery is underway. Today, initial weekly jobless claims plunged to 388,000 — the first sub-400k reading since July 2008. Personal income is up. And payroll withholding tax receipts are up. But we haven’t seen the employment rate come down meaningfully or significant additions to payrolls. If the December report comes in under expectations — expect a swift and violent decline before the uptrend resumes. If the report just meets expectations or even exceeds them, we could see a quick upward pop that sucks in all the cash on the sidelines like a flash fire exhausting all the oxygen in the room. I think the more optimistic scenario is likely and recommend investors focus on stocks in sectors groups demonstrating relative strength. In the emerging markets, Brazil, Thailand, and Malaysia all look strong. Related ETFs include the Market Vectors Brazil Small Cap (NYSE: BRF ), iShares Thailand (NYSE: THD ), and iShares Malaysia (NYSE: EWM ). The Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH ) and Retail SPDR (NYSE: XRT ) are also worth a look. Be sure to check out Anthony’s new investment advisory service, The Edge .
