London Fashion Week: At Erdem, color-saturated gorgeousness

ing2514

Erdemmain1

Designer Erdem Moraliglu could well be described as a painter with fabric. Over the past few seasons, his Impressionist-looking floral print silks have made for some of the most gorgeous clothes coming out of London.

For fall, he went from florals to abstract, color-daubed digitized prints, as well as adding lush velvet to the mix.

Moraliglu let the colors and pattern take center stage, keeping the shapes simple and wearable. That meant knee-length sheaths in velvet or sheer shimmery chiffon; a print pencil skirt painted with strokes of gold, and coats so sweepingly beautiful, they could have been art canvases.

Erdemlace

Like so many other designers this season, he incorporated lace into his collection. A fuchsia sheath was covered in black lace embroidery that appeared to melt into the background. Other dresses were a melange of lace and boucle.

Erdemmain3

For evening, long skirts were worn with patterned knits, and gowns had scarfy chiffon ends trailing behind. There were plenty of extras, too, including color-soaked gloves, trench coats and velvet shoes.

Investors Remain on the Offensive

Despite more chaos in the Middle East and tightening by Chinas central bank, on
Friday, stocks made new two-and-a-half year highs for the third consecutive
week. And even with more oil-rich nations forcing changes in their governments,
which could reduce the flow of oil from the Middle East, the market took the
news in stride and continued to add to its gains. Daily Stock Market News Dow:
+73 points at 12,391.25 S&P 500: +3 points at 1,343 Nasdaq: +2 points at 2,834
Futures and Related ETFs March Crude Oil: +78 cents at $87.14 per barrel; Energy
Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE ) +32 cents at 77.02 April Gold: +60 cents at
$1,385.70 per ounce; PHLX Gold/Silver Sector Index (NASDAQ: XAU ) -11 cents at
212.45 What the Markets Are Saying So far, U.S. markets have all but ignored the
rush to overthrow the governments of Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and Tunisia. Not one
of these countries produces enough oil to have significant impact on the energy
requirements of North America and Europe. But over the weekend, Libya, which
produces 10% of Middle East oil, exploded in crisis and Syria sent two warships
through the Suez Canal. On Monday, oil futures rose almost 4% and European
stocks fell sharply. So far, U.S. stocks have been immune to the upheaval. But
with some of the prime oil-producing states under siege, and the charts showing
spikes, it is time again to review our markets to see where the major support
zones lie. For the Dow, the first line of support is at the psychological number
of 12,200, and for the S&P 500, there is a similar number at 1,300. But there
are other more subtle areas of support that might be of special interest to
traders. For the Dow, it is the 20-day moving average at 12,126, which also
happens to be very close to the intermediate bullish support line, and the
50-day moving average at 11,831. The S&P 500 has a similar pattern with its
20-day moving average at 1,313 and the 50-day at 1,284. The Nasdaqs first
support is at 2,800 with the 20-day moving average at 2,771, and the 50-day at
2,716. Ive noticed that the U.S. dollar and gold have reverted to the normal
reverse correlation. In late January and early February, it looked for a time
that gold and the buck would head in the same direction, and that direction was
down. But last week, they diverged with the dollar heading down and gold up. Now
the dollar, as measured by the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund
(NYSE: UUP ), is having problems making real headway and is stalled at the
resistance at around $22.60. Gold, however, broke above its 50-day moving
average and is plodding into the triple-top resistance that begins at just over
$136 for the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD ).  What I find curious is that in a
clear crisis where the worlds oil supply may be at risk, neither gold nor the
U.S. dollar is operating in a normal way as the objects of a flight to safety.
Instead, the stock market heads higher.  Conclusion: The Fed is still buying
and those who follow their direction are ignoring the normal defensive reactions
that would normally drive gold, the dollar, and other defensive stocks and
commodities higher. The lone exception to this thesis is silver, and you could
also throw in the other industrial metals, as well they are running on a new
world inflationary cycle that for now is focused on usable materials and
consumable commodities.  For one stock that traders should take profits in, see

Investors Remain on the Offensive

Despite more chaos in the Middle East and tightening by China’s central bank, on Friday, stocks made new two-and-a-half year highs for the third consecutive week. And even with more oil-rich nations forcing changes in their governments, which could reduce the flow of oil from the Middle East, the market took the news in stride and continued to add to its gains. Daily Stock Market News Dow: +73 points at 12,391.25 S&P 500: +3 points at 1,343 Nasdaq: +2 points at 2,834 Futures and Related ETFs March Crude Oil: +78 cents at $87.14 per barrel; Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE ) +32 cents at 77.02 April Gold: +60 cents at $1,385.70 per ounce; PHLX Gold/Silver Sector Index (NASDAQ: XAU ) -11 cents at 212.45 What the Markets Are Saying So far, U.S. markets have all but ignored the rush to overthrow the governments of Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and Tunisia. Not one of these countries produces enough oil to have significant impact on the energy requirements of North America and Europe. But over the weekend, Libya, which produces 10% of Middle East oil, exploded in crisis and Syria sent two warships through the Suez Canal. On Monday, oil futures rose almost 4% and European stocks fell sharply. So far, U.S. stocks have been immune to the upheaval. But with some of the prime oil-producing states under siege, and the charts showing spikes, it is time again to review our markets to see where the major support zones lie. For the Dow, the first line of support is at the psychological number of 12,200, and for the S&P 500, there is a similar number at 1,300. But there are other more subtle areas of support that might be of special interest to traders. For the Dow, it is the 20-day moving average at 12,126, which also happens to be very close to the intermediate bullish support line, and the 50-day moving average at 11,831. The S&P 500 has a similar pattern with its 20-day moving average at 1,313 and the 50-day at 1,284. The Nasdaq’s first support is at 2,800 with the 20-day moving average at 2,771, and the 50-day at 2,716. I’ve noticed that the U.S. dollar and gold have reverted to the normal reverse correlation. In late January and early February, it looked for a time that gold and the buck would head in the same direction, and that direction was down. But last week, they diverged with the dollar heading down and gold up. Now the dollar, as measured by the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (NYSE: UUP ), is having problems making real headway and is stalled at the resistance at around $22.60. Gold, however, broke above its 50-day moving average and is plodding into the triple-top resistance that begins at just over $136 for the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD ).  What I find curious is that in a clear crisis where the world’s oil supply may be at risk, neither gold nor the U.S. dollar is operating in a normal way — as the objects of a flight to safety. Instead, the stock market heads higher.  Conclusion: The Fed is still buying and those who follow their direction are ignoring the normal defensive reactions that would normally drive gold, the dollar, and other defensive stocks and commodities higher. The lone exception to this thesis is silver, and you could also throw in the other industrial metals, as well — they are running on a new world inflationary cycle that for now is focused on usable materials and consumable commodities.  For one stock that traders should take profits in, see the Trade of the Day . Credit Card Fees Interest Rates lower Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card, others; Bureau keeps Interest Rate Hikes Penalties Lower

Owners of credit cards like, American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover card are experiencing the benefits of new government regulations that affect credit card companies in America. The recession made it extremely difficult for many Americans to pay their bills and credit card companies were initiating exorbitant amounts of fees and penalties on the consumer for paying a bill late or paying less than the minimal payment denoted. The government passed legislation to control credit card company fees and penalties. The government enacted new regulations last year to decrease the power of the credit card companies regarding late fees and penalties and the American consumers are feeling the reprieve. Benefits include lower interest rate hikes on many credit cards and when a late fee is required, the credit card companies now have limits to what they can charge. Specifically, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which was newly constructed, posted data reveals the questionable billing practices of many credit card companies has been curtailed. According to the bureau, the above average and unacceptable credit card penalty charges have dramatically decreased. Before the regulations were instituted by the federal government, cardholders were paying an average of just over $900 million in late fees and penalties. After the regulations were initiated and in place, credit card holders were paying much less. The average amount card holders are paying out now for fees and penalties comes to approximately $427 million according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The watchdog and enforcing power of the bureau appears to be effective and is helping American consumers recover along with our nation’s economy. Author: Stephen Johnson

Play Silver Volatility With SLV Bull Spread

IVolatility is a leading provider of options data, analysis tools and
best-in-class volatility charts. The move upward by gold futures last week
suggests a technical case can be made that the active pattern is a complex Head
& Shoulders Top with the head at the December 7 high of 1434.10, basis the April
Futures contract. Options trading investors should consider a bull call spread
in iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV ). Silver is giving a different picture as it
reversed upward after a minor correction and resumed moving higher, closing
above the January 3 high of 31.275. Now at 32.30, basis the active March Futures
contract, it negated the Head & Shoulder Top pattern. SLV closed on Friday at
31.79. Last Thursdays close above the January 3 high of 30.44, cancelled the
previous SLV Head & Shoulders Top pattern. However, there is now a divergence
since gold still remains in a potential Head & Shoulders Top pattern and copper
did not exhibit the same strength last Thursday and Friday. Silver is breaking
out, a divergence from gold, sending mixed signals. The divergence with gold is
a concern, but if we are going to trade what we see and not what we think, we
should go with it. The current Historical Volatility is 31.25 with an Implied
Volatility Index Mean of 35.40 for an IV/HV ratio of 1.13 and a bullish put-call
ratio of .35. Consider this bull call spread. B/S Qty O/C USym Exp Strike P/C

All prices are as of Friday Feb. 18. Check todays option chains for current
pricing. Due to the divergence with gold we suggest limiting the trade size as a
risk control measure and setting the SU (stop/unwind) at a close below the
January 3 high of 30.44 the previous head of the negated Head & Shoulders Top.
