Electronic Arts Gets Lift from March Game Sales

tdp2664

After a strong February, the video game industry had a decidedly mixed March. Video game sales proper were down 4% while hardware and accessories were up. Overall, the  industry at the end of the first quarter mirrors the same period in 2010. Considering the relatively bleak year that 2010 was for software stocks and video game sellers, that’s not exactly promising news. For investors though, March’s action has left hints at who will prove strong this earnings season. Nintendo (PINK: NTDOY ) made headlines this month, but canny investors should look at Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS ) rather than the struggling house of Mario. Nintendo released its new portable gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS, on March 27. According to USA Today Nintendo sold just under 400,000 3DSs in the U.S. None too shabby for a machine that was only on sale for part of one week in the reporting period. But With no 3D titles in the video game sales top ten from NPD, however, Nintendo should be concerned the gadget may not have staying power or mass appeal. Also, Nintendo sold just 290,000 Wii home consoles, a year-on-year drop of 48%. That’s a continuing trend, and part of the reason Nintendo’s share price has fallen 21% since February. On the plus side, Nintendo sold 460,000 DS machines along with 2.5 million copies of its new Pokemon Black and Pokemon White games for the #1 and #2 video game titles on the month. Unfortunately, that may not be enough to right the ship for NTDOY. March video game sales were promising for some companies though. Electronic Arts continued to enjoy an impressive 2011 . Its new role-playing game Dragon Age II was the fourth-best seller on the month, while its new shooting game Crysis II took #7 and its boxing simulator Fight Night Champion took #10. Electronic Arts has also said that its other 2011 titles Dead Space 2 and Buletstorm continue to sell well. April should also prove strong for EA— Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 , released on Mar. 29—saw better first week sales than any previous entry in the series according to GamesIndustry.biz . The stock has been hovering near its 52-week-high at $20. Continued strong sales of these titles could push ERTS higher. Other stocks had a decent month as well. Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI ) and its Call of Dut y : Black Ops took #5 on the chart, but has little other good news until it announces new products at the E3 expo in June. THQ (NASDAQ: THQI ) had a major victory with its shooting game Homefront coming in at #3 behind Nintedo’s Pokemon titles, but strong sales didn’t help the stock recover from its March nose dive to $4.50 per share. THQ has been purely a day trading proposition since the 2008 crash. Homefront ‘s performance could turn that around, but investors should wait and see. Take-Two (NASDAQ: TTWO ) is the other stock to watch coming out of March. Its basketball game NBA 2K11 came in at number eight on NPD’s chart, its six month in the top 10. The stock is up 5% since Thursday, trading at $15.80 at the time of writing. The company will likely dominate video game sales going into the third quarter when it releases Rockstar Games’ ( Grand Theft Auto ) L.A. Noire on May 17, much as it did with Red Dead Redemption in 2010. As of this writing, Anthony John Agnello did not own a position in any of the stocks named here. China and India are the largest silver marketplaces globally.Demand for gold from India , the world’s largest buyer of the precious metal is projected to exceed 1,200 metric tons by 2020, according to the World Gold Council .In 2009, China bought more gold than India, making it the world’s top consumer. China pipped South Africa in 2007 as the world’s largest gold producer .Chinese demand for silver has quadrupled in 2010 .In 2010, China imported an unprecedented 14 percent of global silver as the demand for silver has been growing in the country. Till last year, China has been historically been a net exporter of silver. China is the largest gold producer but requires so much of the precious metal (in addition to what it already mines) that it imported more than 209 tonnes during the first 10 months of 2010.Since 2003, Beijing has been buying most of the gold excavated and refined locally.Today, China has more than 1,000 tonnes in its official vaults, up 75% in six years. Its gold reserves are now the fifth-largest among national central banks after the US, Germany, France and Italy. Most of the 1.3 billion people in China only began to acquire and own gold in 2003 as gold ownership was banned from 1945 to 2003. The gold market was liberalized in 2003 .The World Gold Council stated that Indian households are presently in possession of more than 18,000 tons of gold, which represents the world’s largest stockpile.
Eric Sprott, of Sprott Asset Management, reported having difficulty locating enough silver bullion for his new silver fund said : “Frankly, we are concerned about the illiquidity in the physical silver market. We believe the delays involved in the delivery of physical silver to the Trust highlight the disconnect that exists between the paper and physical markets for silver.”
Today the Industrial Silver Demand at 18-year High
The Chinese government is actively encouraging their people to buy physical gold and silver instead of putting their money into real estate.paper silver is not silver, its fiat silver. Properly secured physical silver is real money. Whether its the 90% coins, sterling silverware, or bullion, its all good. silver is becoming rarer than gold, people just don’t know it. With its industrial use as a consumed precious metal, it has the potential to surpass gold in value
Gold is not consumed in industry at the same rate silver is because:
1) Silver is better at conducting electricity

2) Silver has a better thermal transfer rate than gold

3) Silver is a better reflector of light than gold.

4) Silver? is a better catalyst than gold

Has nothing to do with high price, Gold is a lousy industrial metal. If gold cost less than silver, Silver would still be used in much greater numbers than gold.
. Silver can usually replace gold, gold can not substitute for silver, or it can but causes the product to be inferior.

Stock Rebound Isn’t Quite a Rally

tdp2664
InvestorPlace
Mix one part oil-price rise with one part low-volume Friday, and you have plenty of room for another speculative push higher in stocks. Not much of one, mind you, as tech stocks, especially of the large-cap variety, were sitting this rally out, spooked by a rare (in fact, has it ever happened?) miss by Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ). All told, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 57 points to 12,342, the Nasdaq rose 4 points to 2765 and the S&P 500 added 5 points to 1320. Away from the large-caps, the bigger story was a return to favor of small-caps — the Russell 2000 Index rose 0.9%. Yet you can’t really beat oil prices — aside from the repeatable new highs in gold and silver — for a taste of both the present and the future of financial markets. The bullishness that one can glean from oil prices moving higher — that over the long term it must represent some sort of sustainable global demand — will have its built-in limits. And the last one came as crude approached $110 a barrel, as you’ll remember the retreat from that peak a week ago coincided with one in stocks. While a pullback in auto stocks makes sense — General Motors (NYSE: GM ) slipped 1.1% — one can’t help notice that the market was about 1% or so higher than it is now when crude prices contributed to stocks selling off by about 2%. As it was a dubious development when the rally two weeks ago couldn’t quite reach the 2011 highs set in late February (on the S&P 500), it won’t necessarily be a good sign if those April highs become the new ceiling for stocks. A steady diet of earnings reports over the next month may have a lot to do with that, naturally, but it’s funny, bond traders didn’t need to hear from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) to take the 10-year note yield back to its lowest levels of the month on Friday. With stocks looking more uncertain that they can do much in the near term to improve on their 5% gain in 2011, a 3.4% Treasury yield will become even more attractive.

Some Bold Souls Buy Google Call Options

Your daily options trading wrap up. Sentiment Stock market averages are holding
gains, as upbeat economic data trumped uninspiring earnings from Google (NASDAQ:
GOOG ) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ). The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up
63 points and the tech-heavy NASDAQ with 4. The CBOE Volatility Index (CBOE: VIX
) lost .79 to 15.48. Options are actively traded due to the expiration, with 8.3
million calls and 7.3 million puts traded so far. Bullish Flow Google (NASDAQ:
GOOG ) shares are down $45.07 to $533.44 and options are seeing very heavy
trading after the Internet giant reported a quarterly profit of $8.08 per share,
which was two pennies shy of Street estimates. Although the EPS number didnt
miss by much, the concern seems to be over profit margins. Operating expenses
surged to $2.84 billion from $1.84 billion the year before. CEO Larry Page has
pledged to invest heavily in new technology and other opportunities. Some
analysts worry that the company is investing in growth at the expense of profit
margins. Meanwhile, 343,000 options have traded in Google, 63% in the expiring
front-month options. April 530, 535, and 540 puts are the most actives. Beyond
the month of April, the most active is the GOOG May 560 Call . It has traded
5,140 contracts. Open interest is 630 contracts, as some bold players might be
taking positions on hopes for a rebound towards $560 through the May expiration
which represents a 5.1% rally over the next five weeks. Bearish Flow Cemex
(NYSE: CX ) adds 2 cents to $8.78 and an investor buys a 5000-contract block of
CX Jul 9 Puts at 39 cents each. Looks opening and possibly tied to 173,000
shares at $8.75. Shares of the Mexican cement company are up 1.9% in the past
three days, but down 18% year-to-date. Earnings were last reported Feb. 3.
Implied Volatility Mover CBOE Volatility Index (CBOE: VIX ) is down 1.24 to
15.03 and on pace to set a new 52-week closing low, falling below the previous
one at 15.46 set on January 14. VIX hit a low of 14.92 this morning and is now a
far cry (down 52%) from the multi-month high of 31.28 set on March 16. Concerns
about events overseas the Japan nuke crisis, European debt problems, rallying
crude amid conflict in Middle East, North Africa are perhaps taking a backseat
to domestic news heading into the first-quarter earnings reporting season.
Consequently, anxiety levels have eased and the market's "fear gauge" is
back to 15. Meanwhile, in VIX options action Friday, a noteworthy early trade is
a VIX Sep 16 – 20 (2X1) Put Ratio Spread , bought at 1.25, 15,000 times and
might be a bet that the volatility index will sit near 16 when the September VIX
options expiration rolls around. (30,000 VIX Sep 16 Puts sold at 25 cents each).
Options Flow Bullish flow detected in Mylan (NASDAQ: MYL ), with 7149 calls
trading, or four times the recent average daily call volume. Bullish flow
detected in Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD ), with 33,005 calls trading, or four times
the recent average daily call volume. Bullish flow detected in Avon Products
(NYSE: AVP ), with 6365 calls trading, or three times the recent average daily
call volume. Increasing volume is also being seen in Merck (NYSE: MRK) , Johnson
& Johnson (NYSE: JNJ ), and Assured Guaranty (NYSE: AGO ). Frederic Ruffy is the

TODAY’S STOCK MARKET DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE DJI, S&P 500, NASDAQ INDEX TRENDS, NOTES April 15th, 2011 Approaching Close

dow2664

At mid day on Friday the major market indexes were all trending in the green as investors received positive reports on inflation and consumer sentiment that outweighed the latest corporate earnings reports, which fell short of expectations. The Consumer Price Index, which is the government's key inflation measure, showed that prices rose 0.5% in March. The core CPI reading, which strips out food and energy prices, rose only 0.1%. The Consumer Price Index rose in March 2.7% from one year earlier levels and the core reading increased by 1.2% from a year ago. The core reading is considered to be a better long-term predictor of inflation. Although the reading has eased inflation fears for economists, the reading provides no comfort to consumers who continue to pay higher prices for food and gas as companies pass along their costs to consumers. Food prices have jumped 0.8% in March making an overall increase of 2.9% from a year ago. The University of Michigan showed that consumer sentiment rose from 67.5 in March to 69.6 in April, topping economists forecast of 69. The Federal Reserve reported that U.S. industrial production rose 0.8% in March, just above economist’s forecast. Ireland was reportedly hit with another downgrade by Moody’s Investors Service. The country’s credit rating was cut to Baa3, putting it one notch above junk status. Approaching close the major market indexes are all in the green. The Dow gained 56.68 points or 0.46% to 12341.83. The Nasdaq rose 4.4. points or 0.16% to 2764.65. The S&P 500 increased by 5.16 points or 0.39% to 1319.68. The Treasuries 10 year yield was down 0.08 to 3.41%. Oil rose 1.37 to $109.48 a barrel. TODAY’S STOCK MARKET DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE DJI, S&P 500, NASDAQ INDEX TRENDS, NOTES April 15th, 2011 Approaching Close

At mid day on Friday the major market indexes were all trending in the green as
investors received positive reports on inflation and consumer sentiment that
outweighed the latest corporate earnings reports, which fell short of
expectations. The Consumer Price Index, which is the government's key
inflation measure, showed that prices rose 0.5% in March. The core CPI reading,
which strips out food and energy prices, rose only 0.1%. The Consumer Price
Index rose in March 2.7% from one year earlier levels and the core reading
increased by 1.2% from a year ago. The core reading is considered to be a better
long-term predictor of inflation. Although the reading has eased inflation fears
for economists, the reading provides no comfort to consumers who continue to pay
higher prices for food and gas as companies pass along their costs to consumers.
Food prices have jumped 0.8% in March making an overall increase of 2.9% from a
year ago. The University of Michigan showed that consumer sentiment rose from
67.5 in March to 69.6 in April, topping economists forecast of 69. The Federal
Reserve reported that U.S. industrial production rose 0.8% in March, just above
economists forecast. Ireland was reportedly hit with another downgrade by Moodys
Investors Service. The countrys credit rating was cut to Baa3, putting it one
notch above junk status. Approaching close the major market indexes are all in
the green. The Dow gained 56.68 points or 0.46% to 12341.83. The Nasdaq rose
4.4. points or 0.16% to 2764.65. The S&P 500 increased by 5.16 points or 0.39%
to 1319.68. The Treasuries 10 year yield was down 0.08 to 3.41%. Oil rose 1.37
to $109.48 a barrel. Author: Pamela Frost
