Today’s Gold, Silver, Copper December Delivery Price Per Ounce Rate; QE2 effect? Day’s End Review November 13th, 2010

dow2664

Gold, silver and copper price per oune rates moved forward today. Overall, the market had a change of fortunes and reversed much of the negative closing action from last week. Index values received a boost earlier this day and mainly positive trending early was buoyed by the positive retail sales report posting from the Commerce Department. Also, news stemming from world markets helped keep market action in check today and ultimately, precious metal commodities went up. European stocks were on the rise today as Ireland’s government said it is not seeking a bailout. This statement reduced fears that the country would default on its debt. The dollar was moving up today against a basket of other currencies. Specifically, the dollar strengthened against the euro, the British pound and the Japanese yen. Commodities moved back up and precious metals gained some value through today’s trading session. Gold for December delivery moved up .22% today and at the U.S. session end was trading for $1,368.50. Silver for December delivery moved up .58% and was trading for $26.09. Copper December delivery contract price per ounce was up by .81% at $3.92. Gold traffic and precious metal traffic has been less than expected since the Fed’s initiated their QE2 plan. The dollar was expected to devalue but world currency concerns in Europe are helping the dollar stay afloat. Now, there is talk from the Republican power pushing Bernanke to drop the QE2 plan altogether. As of today however, gold, silver and copper price per ounce stays green. Author: Camillo Zucari

The Big VIX Picture

Parsing every little tweak in the VIX sometimes causes me to lose sight of the bigger picture. So let’s take a step back. The VIX has found a pretty comfortable range here. For about five weeks now, it has pretty much stopped at 22 on the upside and found support at 18 on the downside. By historical standards, that’s a pretty reasonable level to churn through. The VIX has a long-term mean very near 20, so in that sense, we could see a level closer to fair. This, however, belies some real changes under the surface. The market itself has strengthened quite a bit since then, even factoring in the weak stretch last week. Here is a chart of the SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY ): With SPY up between 4% and 5% in a little over a month, the VIX hasn’t budged. Hmm. Maybe realized volatility has ticked up? Or not. Here’s the 10-day historical volatility in SPY over the past two months: It ticked up a bit lately, but has actually drifted since early October. So it remains more apprehension about future volatility than reaction to current volatility that’s keeping VIX nestled around here. Volatility expectations have abated, however, if you look at VIX futures and VIX futures ETNs like the iPath S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXZ ): VXZ proxies four-to-seven-month VIX futures. From top to bottom, VXZ dropped 20% during a period of churning VIX. So, what’s it all mean? I believe it suggests VIX itself will have trouble pushing much higher from here. The VIX overprices realized volatility in the market, and it “over-fears” a decline in the market itself. Trading VIX products may not prove disastrous, though. VIX futures still carry premiums across the curve, but not at an enormous magnitude. The four-to-seven-month futures in VXZ trade about $5-$6 over VIX. This ETN has a history of only about 22 months, so there’s not a lot to go on, but that’s not a high premium with the VIX itself at a middling level. If you hold a VIX future of that duration, it will eventually move to parity, but if you hold VXZ, it will not. There is the risk that the VIX itself will decline, but the futures premium part of it should hang relatively steady. Follow Adam Warner on Twitter @agwarner .

Today’s Gold, Silver, Copper December Delivery Price Per Ounce Rate; Week’s End Review November 13th, 2010

This was an up and down week for posts affecting commodities but left precious
metal trending falling off. Values ended the week in the red. This past week for
the stock market was relatively negative and the week finished out as one of the
worst in three months. Gold price per ounce fell. Silver price per ounce fell
and copper price per ounce fell. More specifically, gold contract for December
delivery ended the session with a floor price of $1,365.50 an ounce. Silver
contract for December delivery ended the session with a floor price of $25.94 an
ounce. Copper contract for December delivery ended the session with a floor
price of $3.89 an ounce. Analysts contend that news stemming relevant to Chinas
economy is spooking investors and caused a sell off and thus ended the session
negatively. The G-20 summit in Seoul ended yesterday and leaders of the
world's major economies would not unify to support the U.S. led efforts to get
China to let its currency rise. President Obama, along with a contingent of
currency and trade experts, believe that China has an unfair trade advantage due
to the exchange rate value of its currency. The current low value of the yuan
makes it cheaper for nations to export out of China. Speculation over an
interest rate hike to cool down China's fast growing economy had a negative
affect on the index value trending during the U.S. trading session to end the
week and this speculation also took its toll on commodity values. Author:

Short Financials on a Bounce

Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: FAZ ) — This exchange-traded fund (ETF) seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, of 300% of the inverse of the Russell 1000 Financial Services Index. The fund normally creates short positions by investing at least 80% of net assets in financial instruments that, in combination, provide leveraged and unleveraged exposure to the index.  A pop above FAZ’s 50-day moving average, now at $12.75, would signal a run to $14. But traders should not chase inverse funds. Instead, let them come to you. Exercise patience and try to buy FAZ on a market bounce that could cause it to fall to $11 or lower. Leveraged ETFs seek to deliver multiples of the performance of a benchmark, while inverse ETFs seek to deliver the opposite of the performance of a benchmark. These ETFs entail unique risks, including, but not limited to: the use of leverage, aggressive and complex investment techniques, and the use of derivatives. Returns over longer periods will likely differ in amount and even direction of the underlying. These products are not suitable for all investors. They require active monitoring and management. Analysts contend that news stemming relevant to China’s economy is spooking investors and caused a sell off and thus ended the session negatively. The G-20 summit in Seoul ended yesterday and leaders of the world's major economies would not unify to support the U.S. led efforts to get China to let its currency rise. President Obama, along with a contingent of currency and trade experts, believe that China has an unfair trade advantage due to the exchange rate value of its currency. The current low value of the yuan makes it cheaper for nations to export out of China. Speculation over an interest rate hike to cool down China's fast growing economy had a negative affect on the index value trending during the U.S. trading session to end the week and this speculation also took its toll on commodity values.
