Tuesday’s Apple Rumors — Tablets Take a Toll

Here are your Apple rumors and news items for Tuesday: iPad 2 Hits PCs: Shareholders in stalwart PC stocks like Hewlett-Packard (NASDAQ: HPQ ) and Dell (NASDAQ: DELL ) received bad news on Tuesday. Deustche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore told investors in a note that supply chain sources are pointing to slow PC sales during the first quarter of 2011 due to “weak demand.” Whitmore more than halved his prediction for PC sales for the full year as a result, to 4% from 9%. And surprise: Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad tablet PC is named as a significant cause, by Whitmore, who raised his tablet PC sales target to 45 million, 35 million of which will be iPad 2s. Whitmore also emphasized doubt in the prospects that H-P, Dell, Samsung, and Research In Motion’s (NASDAQ:RIMM) chances in the space: “We remain skeptical whether [they] can close the competitive gap on iPad 2.” Yes, We Can Hear That: A new ChangeWave indicates that Verizon’s (NYSE: VZ ) big sales pitch for the iPhone 4 — that its network offers more reliable voice support than AT&T (NYSE: T ) — is more than just talk. Significantly fewer Verizon iPhone users reported dropped calls than did AT&T users — just 1.4% of Verizon iPhone users reported experiencing dropped calls since the phone was released in February. Nearly 5% of AT&T iPhone subscribers have experienced dropped calls in the past 90 days. While it’s still too early to tell if the iPhone will be the defining success for Verizon this year, it's at least promising to see that the influx of new iPhone users hasn’t put undue strain on the company’s 3G network. App Probe: MarketWatch reported on Monday that a federal grand jury has subpoenaed streaming radio business Pandora and other web businesses, which are suspected of violating user privacy rights with Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Android and Apple mobile apps, collecting data on users without their express agreement. While positioning information like GPS location is well-regulated, there are still only a few guidelines restricting businesses from compiling user information throughout entertainment and utility apps downloaded through digital storefronts. As of this writing, Anthony John Agnello did not own a position in any of the stocks named here. Follow him on Twitter at  @ajohnagnello  and  become a fan of  InvestorPlace on Facebook.
