The government’s trillion dollar deficit is causing many legislators to call for cuts to state and federal funding for programs that touch the lives of just about all Americans. Some of the most popular programs, like Medicare and Social Security are not free of the debate and potential reform movement. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan recently proposed major reform for the Medicare system in America. The details of this plan will be unveiled this week and the debate will move ahead. Senior citizens in America are mostly against any cuts to the Medicare system for obvious reasons. Seniors have had to endure two years without cost of living adjustments in their social security checks. All the while, the cost of many necessities, such as food and gas, have increased dramatically during that time frame. Prescription drugs are on the rise as well and their Medicare Part D plans often are not enough to cover the cost of brand name prescription medications. Now, politicians like Ryan want to potentially reduce what is currently not enough for our nation’s seniors. The goal is to privatize. The government will only give a fixed amount based on overall inflation percentages. This plan is likely to end up with more than just a doughnut hole. Author: Genny Germano
