News Update: German Official Says Germany, France Reach Agreement on Greek Aid Package

3/25/2010-A German government official told Dow Jones Newswires Thursday, the Chancellor Angela Merkel has won the support of France for her proposal for a joint International Monetary Fund and bilateral aid package from euro-zone countries should Greece require assistance. News of the agreement came after Merkel met French President Nicolas Sarkozy for bilateral talks ahead of the summit of European Union leaders. Sarkozy’s support of the proposal is crucial as he had opposed the involvement of the IMF in the past. Dow Jones reports that a growing number of EU members said earlier Thursday that they support the involvement of the IMF. The EU summit will be dominated by talks on how to help Greece avoid a default on its debts without encouraging irresponsible borrowing by other governments, Dow Jones said. The prospect of helping Greece has been a tricky political issue for Merkel as the German public overwhelmingly opposes a German bailout of the debt-ridden nation.
