Health care reform is affecting Medicare and Medicare beneficiaries. The Affordable Care Act health care reform goals include curbing health care costs, particularly in Medicare. Medicare has several parts for various coverage options. In 2010 and 2011, health care reform allows for two main ways for one to acquire medicare coverage. One can acquire Medicare coverage through original Medicare plans such as Part A, Part B and or Part D. The other avenue one can consider is acquiring a Medicare Advantage Plan like an HMO of PPO. We are currently in the middle of an open enrollment period for Medicare Plans and many beneficiaries, and even those looking to become new plan holders, are reviewing optional plans that best fit their medical needs. Medicare Part A covers hospital insurance. Medicare Part B covers medical insurance. Medicare part D covers prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans combines Part A, Part B and usually Part D. Open enrollment for Medicare plans ends on December 31st of 2010. The popularity of incorporating private health plans through Medicare-approved private health insurance companies is gaining popularity as indicated by statistics gathered by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit health policy organization. Their popularity has grown according to the foundations data as the number of private plans incorporated has risen in the past 5 years from 5.3 million plans to just over 11 million active plans.
