The state of employment across the U.S. is leading news as the nation works towards economic recovery. Retail data has been positive this season but postings relevant to unemployment averages for the past month were provoking. After several months of data showing that the national unemployment average flatlined at 9.6%, the average bumped higher for this past month. The most recent data reveals that the national unemployment rate jumped to 9.8%. This increase was a surprisingly negative blow to the American economic recovery. Contrary to this news, jobless data coming out this week paints a more positive picture. The Labor Department reported yesterday that jobless claims fell back towards the lowest level of the year. Data of first time claims for unemployment benefits fell to 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 420,000 in the week ending December 4th. The four week average of claims dropped again for the fifth straight week. This was more positive news and in contrast to last months unemployment numbers. This is great news for those looking to reenter the job market. In addition to this news, Congress finally reached a compromise and parties have agreed to pass an extension of unemployment benefits. Americans now have an extended option to file for unemployment benefits, but 99 weeks is still the maximum amount of time that one can receive these government provisions. Author: Stephen Johnson
