Programs such as Medicare and Medicaid are being challenged by budgetary hawks on capitol hill due to the ever enlarging national deficit and fraudulent behavior. American’s that count on these federally funded benefits are growing more anxious by the day as members of Congress debate ways to make cutbacks and changes to programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. Health care reform is upon us and many feel that it is only a matter of time before legislation passes that modifies the benefits and supports that are available for Americans in need. More Americans are thinking about potential loss of Medicare and Medicaid program services as legislation recently passed through the House that aims to make general program cuts with the goal of reducing the growing deficit in our nation. Adding fuel to the fire for those looking to dismantle aspects of provisional programs such as Medicare are the recent allegations that Medicare fraud is on the rise. Medicare faud only adds to the cost of such programs, and adds strength to those members of Congress and the public that are calling for health care reform and cutbacks. Federal authorities recently charged over one hundred medical professionals with conspiring to defraud the medicare program, along with the elderly patients, of hundreds of millions of dollars. Medicare is under the microscope right now and fraudulent action such as this only supports the need for change. Author: Genny Germano
