Unemployment Benefits Expire, Tier Extension Discussed with President Obama; Many Americans Could be without Jobless Insurance by Christmas if...

Unemployment checks are about to expire for the many jobless Americans that were receiving federally issued unemployment insurance across our nation. The average weekly unemployment benefit in the United States is just over $300 but the specific amount depends on specific state supplement programs which vary between states. Federal unemployment benefits for many Americans had an expiration date of November 30th, 2010. This day, which has come and passed without a benefit extension provided, is the date on which unemployment benefits were not reauthorized or extended. Without the extension, some 2 million people will go without jobless benefits across America by Christmas. Preventing an extension from going through is Congressional opposition declaring that benefits of this sort should not be a primary agenda item when the national deficit looms at over $13 trillion. Earlier this week, a Democrat-sponsored bill was introduced in the senate which would have reauthorized unemployment benefits but was not accepted as legislators want to know where the money would stem from to pay for the benefit program. Currently, adding to the national deficit does not seem to be an option many Republicans, and a contingent of Democrats, are willing to consider. These legislators are open to the idea of extending unemployment benefits to those Americans in need, but only if the money to pay for such a program is found through spending reductions in other areas that are currently affecting the overall budget.
