Medicare Part D is a Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. Medicare Part D plans are prescription drug coverage plans that help Americans cover the cost of prescription drugs. This program, along with others, is costly. Part D a is prescription drug coverage option run by Medicare approved private insurance companies. Joining a Medicare prescription drug coverage plan requires that one have Medicare Part A or B. Joining a Medicare Advantage Plan requires that one already have Part A and Part B. One of the problems making headlines with Medicare Part D is the “Doughnut Hole”. The hole is caused by a gap in coverage that previously caused those enrolled to cover the cost of their medications after having received a certain dollar amount of coverage. The “hole” is expected to be closed completely by 2012. The good news for those enrolled is that come 2011, Medicare has negotiated a 50 percent discount on the cost of prescription drugs for those experiencing this gap in coverage. Another problem relates to overall cost of such programs for the American government. All changes relate to current health care reform and much of the debate relates to cost of the programs. One thing is for certain though, programs that provide provisions that cost the federal government will need to experience further change. Programs such as Medicare and Social Security are in the spotlight and reform will be hard to swallow. Author: Stephen Johnson
