The minimum wage debate continues and legislators across the nation are debating the merit of having a federally mandated minimum pay for American workers. Minimum wages vary state to state, but to be opposed to minimum wage as a legislator is to position oneself away from the majority line of thought across the United States. Minimum wage remains a popular construct in our society and lawmakers that work towards increasing state’s minimum wage gain consensus popularity. According to recent data released by the National Employment Law Project, several states are currently positioned to raise minimum wages as of January 1st, 2011. Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Colorado and Montana are slated for the New Year increases. American workers in these states are eagerly anticipating the increase in their regular paychecks, some receiving more than others however. Payrolls are set for an increase in these states and Washington is preparing for the most significant increase. Washington will raise its state minimum wage by $.12 cents which will bring the state’s hourly rate to $7.35. The National Employment Law Project is pushing for more states to increase minimum wage.
