Apple (AAPL) Rumors – Models, Digital Store

Here are the daily Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL ) news and rumors for December 16th, 2010. A slew of news as Apple officially announces  the Mac App Store launch date, a rumor suggests that a redesigned MacBook Pro and iMac will be released in 2011, and a survey indicates that the iPad’s number of enterprise customers could double early next year.  Finally, Sony brings the Playstation gaming brand to iPhones with the new Playstation App. Apple Mac Store Opens Worldwide January 6 th : Apple  officially announces its new digital storefront for its line of Mac desktop and laptop computers –the OS X Snow Leopard Apple App Store — will go live on January 6 th , 2011. It will launch in 90 countries. Free and paid apps will be available in categories including Games, Graphic Design, Utilities, Lifestyle, Productivity, and Education. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, “The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun.” That easy and fun factor will be important if the Mac App Store is to succeed where Apple’s widgets have failed. Widgets are small, typically free, applications for use in a secondary desktop, called the Dashboard, application that launched with OS X 10.5 Leopard. The small apps were broadly ignored by users even though they were very much progenitors to iPhone apps. New iMac, MacBook Pro Coming in First Half of 2011: Taiwanese tech website DigitTimes says it hears the Mac App Store launch will coincide with the release of two new models of Mac computer. “Upstream component makers” are cited as indicating that Apple will launch redesigned versions of their iMac desktop and MacBook Pro laptop next year. The report says that there will be “at least four upgraded MacBook Pros.” The redesigned high-end laptop models will feature “a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market.” Both computers will run on the next version of OS X, 10.7 nicknamed Lion. Steve Jobs said that Lion would launch by summer 2011, indicating that the new MacBook Pro and iMac will release around July 2011. iPad Enterprise Market Could Double in Q1 2011: Survey: A survey of 1,651 enterprise IT buyers conducted in November by ChangeWave Research found that Apple’s iPad is leading the charge in corporate tablet adoption. While only 7% of respondents said that they have given tablets to employees for work use, 82% of those respondents are using Apple’s iPad in their businesses. The survey found that the company’s using tablets are more satisfied with Apple’s tablet than competing products from Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL ) and Hewlett Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ ). Results also indicate that Apple’s corporate iPad sales could double in next year, with 78% of respondents planning to purchase iPads for employees rather than competing tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Sony Launches Playstation App for iPhone: Rumors have swirled that Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE , NASDAQ: ERIC ) is plotting to release a Playstation branded smartphone next year to compete with Apple’s iPhone and Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Android phones. Though an official announcement of a Playstation Phone is still forthcoming, the Playstation brand will hit the smartphone market in the immediate future. Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that it will be launching a Playstation App for iPhones running iOS 4 and Android phones running OS 1.6 “very soon.” The app will let Playstation Network—Sony’s online gaming network of users on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable gaming devices—members track their trophies (secondary goals achieved in games), read the official Playstation Blog, and share information. As of this writing, Anthony Agnello did not own a position in any of the stocks named here.
