Unemployment benefit for the unemployed is being debated across our landscape currently as the cost is skyrocketing and an extension of benefits is needed by many. The Unemployment rate across our nation is hovering at the 9.6% to 9.7% range and has been at least that high for months. Recent data shows that the number of people currently filing for unemployment remained unchanged at 14.8 million. The trend line of the cost of federal unemployment provisions has been rising steeply for several years and is now more than three hundred billion dollars over the past three years. With the amount of dollars that the federal government injects into the unemployment benefit program, extending these benefits in their current form has been a controversial topic of debate in the current economic climate. Congress needs to determine this month if they will provide an extension of unemployment benefits for approximately 2 million people that are out of work and trying to find employment. The benefits are set to expire on November 30th, 2010. Congress will take the rising cost into consideration when determining if they will extend the benefits again this year. If they do extend the benefits, it will be the fifth time this year. The pressure is mounting for the government to extend as droves of advocates are putting political pressure on the decision makers. Individual states are depleting their resources right now to help support the unemployed and are starting to resort to federal loans to cover the expenses. At issue now for extension is the third level, or tier, of unemployment benefit that would extend benefit insurance to an unemployed citizen for up to 53 weeks. Author: Stephen Johnson
