This year marks the 50th anniversary of the good, old-fashioned copy machine. Few people are aware that those office copy machines store thousands of documents on hard drives, and are resold without being cleaned. As KOLD News 13′s Mark Stine reports, advanced technology has opened a dangerous hole in data security.
Late last year a company prospecting for gold in the larger Migori district announced that there were enough deposits of gold in the country to support commercial mining. However such companies are yet to get licenses to start mining and the locals are using primitive equipment to mine. Andrew Ochieng has the details.
rt.com The US has recently announced the discovery of nearly $1 trillion worth of mineral deposits in Afghanistan, but did the US know about them in 2007? A 2007 United States geological survey indicated that Afghanistan is one of the worlds’ biggest depositories of minerals and precious metals. These include iron, copper, gold, and others. In fact, Afghanistan may be the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” reported the New York Times. Did the 2007 USGS report effect US President Barack Obama decision to expand the war in Afghanistan, asked Paul Jay, the CEO and editor of The Real News Network. “There’s enough information to have what one could call an informed speculation,” said Jay. The report from 2007 however is solid evidence that there are vast amounts of resources in Afghanistan and that both the US, Afghanistan the world’s major powers were aware. Read more “When President Obama was making his decision, if this had been public, people would have said, is this another grab for oil as the war in Iraq was?,” said Jay. Jay argues the reason these details are coming to light now is because the situation in Afghanistan is worsening and the withdraw date set by Obama is approaching; the finding of vast minerals gives the government a new rational to stay. “There is going to be a presence of American troops there for a long time,” said Jay. The story was broke by the New York Times, with direct quotes from General Petraeus and access to an internal pentagon memo no one else had …

For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com The Chinese regime is Africa’s largest trade partner and miners in countries such as Ghana increasingly rely on Chinese equipment and capital. But there are concerns that Chinese entrepreneurs are involved in illegal mining activities beyond the view of Ghana’s regulatory regime, and locals say their share of the profits is shrinking. Foreign gold seekers are nothing new in Ghana, but a new wave of prospectors are now making their presence felt, this time from China. Ghana’s laws say foreign companies are only allowed to work on large, open-pit operations. But campaigners say Chinese entrepreneurs are also illegally controlling small-scale operations behind the scenes, typically through a local intermediary. Ghana is Africa’s second largest gold exporter. More than 100000 Ghanaians work in these small, dark mine shafts. Together they produce about 20 percent of the country’s gold. The Chinese regime is Africa’s largest trade partner with two-way volume reaching $100-billion US dollars in 2010. Some welcome the Chinese because they bring necessary capital and equipment. But some workers in Ghana’s pits accuse Chinese entrepreneurs of increasing their share of local profits. [Joseph Ben, Former Illegal Miner] “The Chinese people bring their equipment which makes the work easy for you and they know the work too, but when you are sick they don’t pay your hospital bills you have to use your own money.” Mr. Ben says he used to work in a …

The unemployment rate fell to a two year low this past week as the March reading of the national unemployment rate reading posted a notch lower than the February reading. Officially, the unemployment rate fell to a two year low of 8.8 percent in March, down from 8.9 percent in February. Specifically, the nation’s economy grew to the tune of an additional 216,000 jobs that were created in March. This good news helps support the positive trends observed recently in the jobs sector. Fewer Americans recently applied for first time unemployment benefits this past week as well. Overall, the unemployment rate has dropped more over the last four months than it has dropped over that same 4 month time frame in the past couple of decades. The economy is making substantial progress. The fact that our nation is recovering, jobs are improving and less Americans are filing for unemployment benefits is a plus, especially for those Americans living in Texas. Thousands of people in Texas are claiming unemployment during this current time but the funds set aside to pay out these benefits are depleting according to state program auditors. Even though the nation’s recovery is moving forward, our nations states will be paying back loans that were needed to pay for unemployment benefits for years. President Obama is considering waiver options on interest rates relating to these loans provided to over half the states in our union. Author: Stephen Johnson

A large move by an options trading investor in the in-play NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX ) doesn't seem to see the stock going much higher, despite the fact that there's a battle to take over the firm. The stock of NYX, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has jumped on a higher bid for the exchange owner from Nasdaq OMX Group (NASDAQ: NDAQ ) and Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE ). NYX is up 11.52% to $39.22 after the hostile bid of $42.50 in cash and stock for each NYX share. An earlier offer from Deutsche Boerse was roughly $35.04 a share. The options are quite active, with more than 70,000 contracts already trading this morning. Topping the volume list is an interesting call spread. OptionMONSTER’s systems show that NYX 6,300 April 34 Calls traded for $5.20 against open interest of more than 12,000. Seconds later, 6,300 NYX June 37 Calls traded for $2.80. That volume is more than twice the previous open interest. So it appears that this is a roll from April to June as the stock surges. But the interesting part is that the April calls were apparently bought and the June calls sold, which would indicate a roll of a short call position. This is very likely done against long stock as a covered call position. Currently those June $37 calls have a small amount of time value, but the trade may be part of a larger merger arbitrage-type strategy. Futures on the Dow Jones (INDEXDJX:.DJI) are trading 142 points above fair value and futures on the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) are higher by 17 points after financial authorities from over 20 countries have released details of new banking rules regarding bank capital. Known as Basel III, the rules will require banks to raise common equity levels from 2% to 4.5% and Tier 1 ratios shall be raised from 4% to 6%. A countercyclical buffer within a range of 0% – 2.5% of common equity will also be required raising the total capital requirement to 7%. The rules, which will need to be ratified by the G-20 nations, require that banks comply with these minimum ratios within five years and those that do not meet the requirements will not be permitted to pay dividends but will not be forced to raise capital. Analysts had expected Tier 1 requirements to be raised to 8%, so perhaps the slightly lower capital requirements and the later deadlines are being viewed as positive by investors.
— The Dow Jones industrial market is down and looks to continue to head that direction. This is not good news for the worlds economies that are trying to bounce back after this recession hit many different nations. Is this a direct reflection of the Greece financial crisis?

Another panel discussion, this featuring Scott Bleier, Tobin Smith, Gary B. Smith and Alexis Glick. What you see in these four videos is the beginning of a long-term, strategic propaganda campaign against CNBC and its parent company General Electric. Murdoch’s malicious minions have begun to trash the names GE, CNBC and NBC. This group of companies is clearly competition to News Corps and Murdoch has no qualms about requiring that his paid business analysts push an agenda that erodes confidence in his chief competitors. This isn’t news – business or otherwise. With Murdoch, you get controlled news and back-stabbing gutter tactics, cleverly designed to weaken rivals and/or bring down any politician or person in power who doesn’t dance to the Murdoch tune.

3/25/2010-A German government official told Dow Jones Newswires Thursday, the Chancellor Angela Merkel has won the support of France for her proposal for a joint International Monetary Fund and bilateral aid package from euro-zone countries should Greece require assistance. News of the agreement came after Merkel met French President Nicolas Sarkozy for bilateral talks ahead of the summit of European Union leaders. Sarkozy’s support of the proposal is crucial as he had opposed the involvement of the IMF in the past. Dow Jones reports that a growing number of EU members said earlier Thursday that they support the involvement of the IMF. The EU summit will be dominated by talks on how to help Greece avoid a default on its debts without encouraging irresponsible borrowing by other governments, Dow Jones said. The prospect of helping Greece has been a tricky political issue for Merkel as the German public overwhelmingly opposes a German bailout of the debt-ridden nation.
Kara Swisher is Not Keen on News Corp Takeover of Dow Jones….And the Bancrofts Seem to Agree Kara Swisher, a longtime reporter and columnist at the Wall Street Journal, is one of the most influential technology journalists/author. She has also built a hugely successful conference business “D” for the Dow Jones Company. Just last week, she launched a blog with colleague Walt Mossberg. The new blog has lots of really good videos. I spoke with her this morning on Hollywood Boulevard outside the the AlwaysOn OnHollywood conference where Kara moderated a panel with Kevin Rose, Arianna Huffington and Alan Citron. I asked Kara about the prospect of a News Corp bid for the Dow Jones company. Like many of her colleagues at the Journal, she is not too thrilled. It seems that the Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones, is not too thrilled either. The Wall Street Journal just reported that the Bancroft family is “taking no” action on the Murdoch bid.
